Popcorn Time Portable, Watch Movies and TV Shows instantly!
"Popcorn Time is the revolutionary app that’s been continuously dubbed the Netflix for torrents. ... The unknown devs also mention other team members who’ve gone on to work on the legal version of Popcorn Time, called Butter...since anonymous developers mean no one can be held accountable if things go awry. ...the site won’t be looking to make money whatsoever. " —Darren Orf, (2/25/16 4:41pm)
"Popcorn Time is a free program that makes torrenting movies and TV shows exceptionally easy. The interface rivals legitimate streaming services such as Netflix, ...uses peer-to-peer networking to download and distribute the videos, it’s susceptible to the same copyright crackdowns as standard BitTorrent methods." —Jared Newman/@onejarednewman, (Sep 2, 2015 8:13 AM)
"The interface is extremely straightforward, with a Netflix instant queue-style quilt of film cover art popping up upon startup. ... Here’s the catch: While torrenting itself is not illegal, downloading and/or distributing copyrighted material is. The problem here is that Popcorn Time looks a lot like Netflix, a popular and legal streaming service. It’s conceivable that users could go unaware that what they’re doing is against the law. ..." —Alex Tretbar, (March 10, 2014)

Release Notes

Requires really FAST Internet connection.
Legality  Although developers of Popcorn Time say that there is nothing illegal about the application as it just acts like a search engine to find content that is already available publicly—depending upon your country—it could be illegal and may attract a fine (or even a jail term).
While we do not encourage using Popcorn Time, the final decision is obviously yours, as the risk the application brings depends completely on the country you are based in.

DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, Launcher Generator/PAL, Installer/PAI.

  1. We have to place our working folder at the drive's root for this application because it has a deep folder structure that PAI can't handle. In this example we use 0TEST as our working folder at drive C: root folder: C:\0TEST. Don't use something like D:\My Projects\Portable App\Popcorn Time, but you can use D:\My Projects for example.
  2. Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
  3. Get the latest Popcorn Time release.
  4. Put it in the same folder as the extracted template, in our example C:\0TEST, then extract the installer by following this guide.
  5. Browse to the extracted folder PopcornTime-latest\{pf32}\Popcorn Time folder → delete Updater.exe → move all contents to PopcornTimePortable\App\PopcornTimeDesktop folder, Move to App\PopcornTimeDesktop
  6. Look up version from PopcornTimeDesktop.exe's Properties, Look up version
  7. Browse to PopcornTimePortable\App\AppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. not just 6.0.3,
     DisplayVersion=6.0.3 Beta
  8. Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:\0TEST\PopcornTimePortable, and click Go—a new launcher will be created, Create new launcher
  9. Test the new launchers by following this guide.
  10. When all is OK, then delete the PopcornTimePortable\Data folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:\0TEST\PopcornTimePortable, and click Go—to create the installer package. Create installer
  11. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don't forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
  12. If you find any changes that's not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.

Portability Notes

  • Popcorn Time do not have portable mode. It stores its settings in Windows registry and writes to data folders while running.
  • Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
  • You can help by sending request to the official developer to add "portable mode" to their future release.
