DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, Launcher Generator/PAL, Installer/PAI.

  1. Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
  2. Get the latest GOM Media Player release.
  3. Put it in the same folder as the extracted template, in our example C:\0TEST, then extract the installer to a folder, Extract to a folder
    click Auto Rename when asked, Auto Rename
  4. Browse into the extracted folder and delete
    1. $PLUGINSDIR folder,
    2. $TEMP folder,
    3. Uninstall.exe.nsis file.
    Move the rest to GOMMediaPlayerPortable\App\GOMMediaPlayer folder.
  5. Move GrLauncher.ini, GrLauncher_1.ini ... GrLauncher_7.ini to App\GOMMediaPlayer\locales folder, and rename:
    1. GrLauncher_1.ini to GrLauncher_en.ini,
    2. GrLauncher_2.ini to GrLauncher_jp.ini,
    3. GrLauncher_3.ini to GrLauncher_cn.ini,
    4. GrLauncher_4.ini to GrLauncher_tw.ini,
    5. GrLauncher_5.ini to GrLauncher_ru.ini,
    6. GrLauncher_6.ini to GrLauncher_es.ini,
    7. GrLauncher_7.ini to GrLauncher_th.ini.
    Rename GrLaunchers
  6. Go back up to App\GOMMediaPlayer folder, open setting.ini with NPP and change CHECK_DEFPLAYER=1 to:
  7. Browse to GOMMediaPlayerPortable\App\AppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. not 2.3.25, Update version
  8. Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:\0TEST\GOMMediaPlayerPortable, and click Go—a new launcher will be created, Create new launcher
  9. Test the new launchers by following this guide.
  10. When all is OK, then delete the GOMMediaPlayerPortable\Data folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:\0TEST\GOMMediaPlayerPortable, and click Go—to create the installer package. Create installer
  11. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don't forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
  12. If you find any changes that's not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.

Portability Notes

  • GOM Media Player do not have portable mode. It stores its settings in Windows registry and data folders while running.
  • Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
  • You can help by sending request to the official developer to add "portable mode" to their future release.

Release History Bug fixed, so since version, the portable app. can store settings without administrator privilege.
