Komodo Edit Portable, a powerful editor without all the advanced functionality an IDE comes with!
"Komodo Edit continues to be my favorite editor for writing HTML and XML. In fact, I use it for nearly every site I build. It is offered with a GPL license which means that there are lots and lots of add-ons and extesions for it as the community builds tools to help make it even better." —Jennifer Kyrnin, (November 25, 2014)
"...if you're not sure whether you need an IDE or just a powerful editor, you can start out with free Komodo Edit and maybe graduate up to IDE if you find you need advanced features such as debugging or source code control integration." —Erez Zukerman, PC World/ (08 Feb 12)
"I like how easy the interface is to load, how well it connects to my hosted servers, and the how quickly the product loads and works. I have used a plethora of text editors in the passed 7 years and Komodo Edit has stayed my editor of choice for 2 years now. It just works great without adding confusing extras." —Bryce M. (a user), (April 11, 2016)

DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, Launcher Generator/PAL, Installer/PAI.

  1. Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
  2. Get the latest Komodo Edit release (msi format).
  3. Extract the msi intaller using this msi extract command line template:
    msiexec /a "___.msi" TARGETDIR="[FULLDIRPATH]\___" /lv*x! "___.txt" /qn
Copy the full command line in NPP and replace the "___" with the msi installer name, and "[FULLDIRPATH]" with full path to current folder, in this example "C:\0TEST":
    msiexec /a "Komodo-Edit-11.0.2 Build 18122.msi" TARGETDIR="C:\0TEST\Komodo-Edit-11.0.2 Build 18122" /lv*x! "Komodo-Edit-11.0.2 Build 18122.txt" /qn
Then paste it in a command window: press SHIFT → right-click on empty space in File Explorer → select "Open command window here" → paste the command line into the command windows → press ENTER, then you can close the window, Open command window
    Paste the command
    Close the window
Watch the progress by switching File Explorer view to "Details", so you can see the log file size increasing, Watch the log progress
When it stops increasing, open the log with NPP. The extraction is completed if you see this at the end of the log: Extraction completed
  4. We'll adjust the extracted files then move them to KomodoEditPortable\App\KomodoEdit folder:
    • Browse to C:\0TEST\Komodo-Edit-11.0.2 Build 18122\PFILES\ActiveState Komodo Edit 11\Win\System and move its contents to C:\0TEST\Komodo-Edit-11.0.2 Build 18122\PFILES\ActiveState Komodo Edit 11 folder, Cut Win\System contents
Paste them to ActiveState Komodo Edit 11
    • Delete Win folder, Delete Win folder
    • Move the whole contents to KomodoEditPortable\App\KomodoEdit folder. Cut ActiveState Komodo Edit 11
      Move them to App\KomodoEdit
Delete the remaining extraction folder and log file.
  5. If the first two digit-place of the version changed, we have to edit the launcher INI file. For example if the previous version is "10.0.x Build xxxxx" and the new version is "11.0.x Build xxxxx", then we need to replace "10.0" in the launcher INI with "11.0".
Open KomodoEditPortable\App\AppInfo\Launcher\KomodoEditPortable.ini in NPP and replace this entry:
Replace version in launcher INI if required
  6. Browse to KomodoEditPortable\App\AppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. not 11.0.2 nor 11.0. Update version
  7. Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:\0TEST\KomodoEditPortable and click Go—a new launcher will be created, Create new launcher
  8. Test the new launcher by following this guide.
  9. When all is OK, then delete the KomodoEditPortable\Data folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:\0TEST\KomodoEditPortable and click Go—to create the installer package. Create installer
  10. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Don't forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
  11. If you find any changes that's not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.

Portability Notes

  • Komodo Edit writes to Windows registry while running, and stores crash data and Mozilla plugins in Windows data folders.
  • Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
